On 24 January Meyer Turku Shipyard delivered the RoPax ferry »Megastar« to Tallink. She will sail between Helsinki and Tallinn[ds_preview] and is setting new standards regarding environmental aspects and comfort. The vessel was built under Bureau Veritas classification and has Ice Class 1a as well as Cleanship and Green passport notation. Tecnitas, the consulting arm of Bureau Veritas, has carried out the HAZID workshop which is mandatory according to the IGF code.

The 212m vessel has a capacity of 2.850 PAX and operates at a speed of 27 kn. She is equipped with one of the largest dual fuel plants ever installed and the first ferry with tanks located inside the hull. The power generation plant consists of three Wärtsilä 12V50DF and two Wärtsilä 6DF50 engines with a total output in gas mode of abt. 46 MW. The LNG is stored in two horizontal IMO Type C tanks which are of double shell design, vacuum insulated and have a capacity of 300m3 each. In the tank connections space (CTS) in front of the tanks all connections as well as the vaporization units are integrated.

The vessel has two bunker stations and can be bunkered by truck in Helsinki and Tallinn. Using LNG as fuel, the »Megastar« fulfills all known future emission regulations regarding NOx and SOx. In addition to that no soot particles are created and CO2 emissions are reduced.

Sea and gas trials as well as bunkering have been carried out successfully so that the vessel could do the maiden voyage on 29th January after less than two years construction time.
