In the first nine month of 2016, cargo tra[ds_preview]nsshipment out of the port of Ghent has reached a new record. In grand total 21.5 mill t have transshipped in the Belgian port.

According to the port at the same period, the total combined maritime and inland cargo traffic also hit a record high. The 38.1 mill. t the port handled in the first nine month 2016 corresponds to an increase of 2.6 mill. t (+7.2 %). Both maritime and inland navigation each grew by 7% or just over that amount.

Maritime and inland navigation increasing

As far as the third quarter of 2016 is concerned, the port of Ghent registered a total maritime and inland cargo transhipment of 12.8 mill. t. That’s a 12.8 % (1.5 mill. t) increase compared to the third quarter of 2015. Both maritime and inland navigation are on the increase.

According to the Belgians this is the second best quarter for maritime shipping ever. Maritime cargo transhipment totalled 7.4 mill. t, an increase of no less than 17.4 % on the previous year. In just two years’ time, maritime cargo transhipment sky went up by 21 %.

Inland navigation clocked out at 5.4 mill. t in the third quarter, an increase of 7 %.
In the third quarter, maritime cargo transhipment saw an increase in naphtha, iron ore, coal and scrap metal.
Cargo that saw a decrease included crude minerals, metal residues and products from the metal industry, among others. For inland navigation, there was considerably more transhipment of petroleum products, crude minerals and construction materials. Inland transhipment of agricultural products, ores and metal residues (iron ore) and products from the metal industry fell.
