Helsinki-based shipyard Arctech has delivered a new multifunctional icebreaking standby vessel for Russian shipowner Sovcomflot and the Sahalin-2 project.

The vessel is the second from four vessel order agreed with SCF Group and the first vessel, »Gennadiy Nevelskoy«, was deliver[ds_preview]ed in the end of January 2017. The new building had naming and delivering ceremony at the same time at the shipyard, which is part of the Russian United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC). It was named after Russian vice admiral and a polar explorer Stepan Makarov.

»Stepan Makarov« (deadweight 3,300 t) is under Russian flag and her home port is St. Petersburg in Russia. Her main duty from the beginning is support Sakhalin-2 project in the Sea of Okhotsk. The main tasks of the vessel are to ensure the safety of the personnel on the offshore oil and gas production platforms, to respond to emergency spills at sea and to support the company‘s operations within its technical capabilities. Ice class (Icebreaker6) and equipment designed for operation at low temperatures (up to – 35 C°) will enable to effectively operate the ship the year round.  According to the shipyard, it fulfills »international standards of ship construction that takes into account operations in hard, arctic conditions« – a segment, in which Russia has ambitious goals. Her ice class is 6 according classification of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.
