In August, the Port of New York and New Jersey set an all-time monthly record for cargo volume handled, surpassing July 2015, the previous best month on record. The volumes keep the port on track for a new annual record in cargo volumes.

In August, the port handled 361,565 contai[ds_preview]ners (631,404 TEUs) , which soared past the previous all-time monthly high of 339,601 containers (588,918 TEUs) logged in July 2015. Cargo volumes in August 2017 also were 7.8 % better than volumes in August 2016.

Also worth noting: at 51,115 lifts, August 2017 rail volumes were 3 percent better than August 2016, qualifying August 2017 as the best rail month in port history. Year-to-date rail volumes are 2.7 percent better than last year.

Import loads for the August 2017 (183,466 containers, 320,848 TEUs) beat August 2016 by 5.2 %. Overall, year-to-date import containers topped 2016 by 5.1 %. Export loads (69,324 containers, 125,312 TEUs) gained 5 % over last August, and year-to-date were 2.4 % better than 2016.

At 52,253 units, auto volumes also continued to soar. They were up 24.6 % compared to August 2016. Year-to-date auto volumes are 11.9 % better than 2016.
