The gold rush on the tanker markets has cooled off quite a bit compared to 2014 and 2015 levels. The[ds_preview] peak in newbuild spending has been in 2015 with 20.8 bn $ in tanker orders. The grand total for 2018 stood at only 9.1 bn $. The second hand market has seen the best total spent in 2014 with 15 bn $. In 2018 this number was down to 6.9 bn $.

The buyers’ darlings between 2012 and 2018 have been Handy Tankers and VLCCs in both the newbuild and the second hand markets. Aframaxes came in third, followed by Small Tankers and Suezmaxes. While Panamaxes still experienced some demand from newbuild and second hand buyers, the Post-Panamax size still has only a niche role.
